Why would you combine PRINCE2 and Agile?

To charge more

To get management buy-in

Compliance with internal and external regulators

To add risk management, closing and initiation processes

Formal steering

As a trojan horse, a less scary way to introduce Agile

To have a small paper trail

To average out the extremes of both methods

Give a (false) sense of control

Large and/or critical projects need to be more formal

Business can't cope with Agile (yet)

Customer can't cope with uncertainty

Stepping stone to more involvement

What could go wrong? Risks of combining PRINCE2 and Agile

Hide behind processes

Can't explain - confusing

Fake "the other" process

Micro-management by project manager

Huge amount of waste

Need to master two sets of techniques, need to know two languages, need to go to two trainings.

Project management task duplication

Unclear role definitions

Stop too early

More focus on cost instead of value (change control board)

Mismatch in expectations

Fear to change the process

Local optimisations (because everything must fit in the PRINCE framework)

Culture fights

C&C steering committee

Blaming the "other side"

How would you combine them? The plan to introduce PRINCE2+Agile

Define one common language

Either cloak Agile in PRINCE2 or add PRINCE2 practices to Agile

Hide PRINCE2

Introduce PRINCE2 techniques when needed

Drop both terminologies

Don't do it

Start by mastering both

Study existing experience

Scale up slowly

Lie

Make only 'highlight' documentation

Educate your customer

Use SCRUM at the work package level

Tailor PRINCE2 to only use the minimum needed

[KoenDeHondt] Koen is involved in the development of a plug-in for Jython development (see http://jydt.sourceforge.net) and he is happy to pair program on a story during a pair programming party.
Actually, the Eclipse platform is a source of topics to work on.

[RingoDeSmet] Ringo is now involved in the development of EIMP (http://eimp.sourceforge.net ), a multi-protocol chat client integrated into Eclipse. It's not so much for the chat itself, but for the opportunities that lie beneath the surface. http://www.codingmonkeys.de/subethaedit/ for example is a programmer's editor that can be shared over the network. Ringo would like to get the same for any Eclipse editor using the chat client as the communication mechanism.

[RingoDeSmet] There exists a SourceForge project for writing Eclipse plugins XP style. It's a bunch of guys from Gent! Shouldn't we contact these guys and ask them to join in? http://bigsplash.sourceforge.net

[PascalVanCauwenberghe] Dave 'Pragmatic Programmer' Thomas has a series of excercizes (or Kata's) on his weblog http://www.pragprog.com/pragdave/ He provides the unit tests, additional requirements, refactoring tips...
Pair Programming Party

What

A pair programming party is an evening devoted to PairProgramming. The objective of the evening is to have fun and to learn from each other.

All participants pair up and work on a small topics during the evening. A story or two is ideal to work on.

Preparation is key. In order to avoid time-consuming discussions on a pair programming party, participants should discuss the topic and the stories upfront, for instance via e-mail or via the wiki.

[Vera] Another possibility is to join in with somebody who has prepared a topic. This means you commit not to question the topic, or the scope of the story concerned.

Participants bring laptops and any other material needed to implement the stories.

Simple rules

The cost of the room is split between the participants

If you want to participate, put your name on the wiki, so that we know how many people will attend.

You pay for any drinks and food you order in the pub.

Topics
Pair programming parties are not bound to a particular programming language. Any language will do. In fact, pairing with someone to program in a programming language that is new to you will be a great learning experience.

It might seem tempting to let all participants work on the same topic or project, but Koen's and Vera's experience in other circumstances showed that finding a shared topic or project is very difficult. It appears that it is better to let programming pairs choose their own topics, based on a shared interest.

Maybe we can post topics on the wiki and let people register their pair programming interest?

Hi, I am Jürgen De Smet and I'm a mean, LEAN, SCRUM-aholic. This is my story in short...

I am working within Healthcare IT for over 13 years, starting out as a service engineer (installations, upgrades, bug fixing & integration development) which is one of the better ways to customer driven development. From there on we went to software engineer, team lead, group lead to production manager, isn't this typical waterfall?

Anyway, back to the agile world ... there we take up the role as Product Owner for 3 scrum teams as well as fulfilling the role of Scrum Coach within a 4 headed scrum coaching or rather scrum help desk team. As I see things I have been working Agile since ... always but only started to tune it to a real proven implementation (Scrum) since beginning 2007. During this process we are trying to lower the typical waterfall pyramids in the organization as well as educate people outside the R&D organization like sales for example, a tough but rewarding quest.

Even though I was not intending to follow a certification course I did it anyway for the reasons that it was extended with a cooking event and it was given by Jeff Sutherland. I probably learned more during the cooking event than the course itself, especially from Jeff since he has a lot of experience within the Healthcare domain.

So now you know my main interests: Agile & Healthcare IT for more info I invite you to http://www.linkedin.com/in/jurgendesmet and/or my bog http://www.agilefun.com

Topic: Business Value Game

Presenters: Vera Peeters & Pascal Van Cauwenberghe

Both are independent consultants. Vera runs her own company Tryx, for Pascal this is Nayima. Both have a significant amount of years experience in developing software systems, development in all kinds of high-technological environments applying agile ways of working in different flavors and environments. Both have presented workshops at several conferences, invented the XP Game as well as they founded XP.be community.

Objectives: Learn how to assign business value to projects
and stories, prioritize and make plans that bring value.

Contents:

Agile teams want to deliver maximum business value. That's easy if the
Onsite Customer assigns business value to each story. But how does the Customer
do that? How can you estimate business value?

How do you decide between stories? How do you decide between projects? How do
you decide between clients?

This session gives you some simple business value estimation techniques that
are "good enough" for everyday use.

The session is run as a game, where teams of 'businesspeople' have to make
plans for their development team. The goal of the game is to deliver the highest
possible business value, like in the XP Game. This game is a complement to the
XP Game: how do these 'business value points" on the XP Game story cards
get chosen?

Each businessperson in the team represents one (or more) clients who will buy
the team's product IF their feature(s) is in the product. The team is going to
have to make some tough decisions; the team is going to have to disappoint some
clients, because the development team has a finite capacity.

Pascal & Vera provide the clients and their wishes + they suggest the
techniques to estimate business value. The rest is up to us.

Agenda:
18.30h Welcome
19.00h Start of the session
20.30h Round up
> be on time!

A big thanks to Bart Reyserhove for the location this time!
Also many thanks to Vera & Pascal for this unique opportunity, much
appreciated!

User Group meeting 26th of June 2008

Introduction

Due to the success of the 'Agile in Belgium' linkedIn group we decided to organize some kind of user group meeting where people can exchange experiences being Agile. For the first meeting we kept it to an introduction into Scrum by means of real life experience within Agfa Healthcare focussing on 2 scrum teams that are in place. Going from there other topics could be discussed in more details.

by David Anderson

If the essence of agile development is rooted in high levels of trust,
how do you set about creating a high trust culture? When so much of what
you and your team may have experienced in their career is based in an
assumption of low levels of trust - contract negotiation, audit, finger
pointing and blame, how do you set about reversing that and building a
high trust culture?

What is trust? How do you build trust between individuals and is it
possible to build trust between teams and across organizations? What are
the benefits of high levels of trust? And why it is essential if your
agile and Lean organization is to be "built to last"?

David Anderson will present for the first time, his extensive research
on trust and collaboration and map his learning with his own experience
as a manager of software engineering departments using agile and Lean
techniques over the last 8 years.

A summary of the session is on Pascal's blog

I used to be a Senior Software Engineer at EMC. I recently became a freelance IT consultant.

When I worked at MediaGeniX, I got introduced to an agile way of working. Since then, unit testing, test-first development and pair programming are the basis of my software development activities.

For the XP.be Pair Programming Parties, I have a long term goal in trying to get the same functionality as SubEthaEdit [1] provides into any Eclipse editor. The current work is to get the Eclipse Instant Messenger Protocol in place, decoupled from it's user interface. After that, the idea is to make any Eclipse editor shareable amongst your chat buddies. I still have to split all the work in stories. This means that the first PPP will probably be a bit chaotic from my side.

I also have a personal website at Scarlet [2], but there is not much to see there yet. You can reach me at Ringo DOT DeSmet AT atriso.be.
